How do I open a link from TikTok in my real browser?

Tap the menu in TikTok's built-in browser (usually three dots, often at the top right) and choose the option to open the page in your browser; if there is none, use Copy link and paste it into Safari or Chrome. The exact labels change between app versions and between iPhone and Android, so look for words like 'Open in browser', 'Open in Safari' or 'Open in Chrome'.

The quick way

TikTok and Instagram have not published an official help page for this that we could find, so these are the steps that commonly work in current versions. Menus move between versions; if yours looks different, look for the same idea under a different icon.

  1. Open the link in TikTok as usual, so the page loads in the app's browser.
  2. Find the menu. It is usually three dots (… or ⋮) in a corner of the screen, most often top right. On some versions it is a share arrow instead.
  3. Choose the option that names a browser: 'Open in browser', 'Open in Chrome', 'Open in Safari' or similar.
  4. The page reopens in your phone's default browser. Sign in or download there.

If there is no 'open in browser' option

iPhone and Android differences

On an iPhone the option usually names Safari, or your default browser if you changed it in Settings. On Android it usually names Chrome or 'browser', and the page opens in whatever your default browser app is. If the link keeps opening in the wrong browser, change your phone's default browser in its settings; that controls where 'open in browser' sends you.

Why TikTok uses its own browser, and is it safe?

A built-in browser keeps you inside the app, one swipe from the video. TikTok has not published an explanation that we could find. For reading a page it is fine. For signing in, paying or downloading, your phone's real browser is the better place: it keeps your saved passwords and logins, and Google's OAuth policy forbids developers from sending its sign-in to embedded browsers[1]. That is the cause of the disallowed_useragent error[2], explained in why you can't sign in with Google inside TikTok.

The reverse: a TikTok link opens in the browser instead of the app

If tapping a tiktok.com link opens a web page instead of the TikTok app, check that the app is installed and up to date. On Android, the system settings for the TikTok app usually have an 'Open by default' or 'Open supported links' switch that sends those links to the app. On iPhone, a banner or button at the top of the web page often offers to open it in the app. As above, the exact wording depends on your phone and system version.

People also ask

Where is the 'open in browser' option in TikTok?
Usually in the three-dot menu of the built-in browser, often at the top right; on some versions it is behind a share icon. The label and position change between app versions.
Why does TikTok open links in its own browser?
It keeps you inside the app, but we could not find an official TikTok explanation.
Can I make TikTok always open links in Chrome or Safari?
We could not find an official TikTok setting for it. You have to choose 'open in browser' or copy the link each time.
Does the same work in Instagram?
Yes, the same approach usually works: the menu in Instagram's built-in browser normally offers to open the page in your browser, and copying the link works as a fallback.
