What are the best Sora 2 alternatives?
Since OpenAI shut down the Sora 2 API on 2026-09-24[1], the closest replacements are Google's Veo 3.1 for a hosted API with published prices, Kling 4.0 and Seedance 2.5 for long single takes of up to 30 seconds, and Runway or Luma for several models under one plan[2][3][4][5][6]. For free use, start with Dreamina's free daily credits or Kling's free tier[7][3].
Replace Sora by what you used it for
| What you used Sora for | Closest replacement | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Long single takes (Sora: 16 or 20 s, up to 120 s with extensions)[8] | Kling 4.0 or Seedance 2.5[3][9] | 30 s per generation on both[3][9] |
| A pay-per-second API (Sora 2 was $0.10/s)[1] | Veo 3.1 Fast or Lite[2] | $0.10/s and $0.05/s at 720p[2] |
| Reusable characters | Seedance 2.5 or Kling 4.0[9][3] | Up to 50 and up to 15 reference assets[9][3] |
| Dialogue with sound | Veo 3.1, Kling 4.0 or Seedance 2.5[10][3][9] | All three generate native audio[10][3][9] |
| Many models in one app | Runway or Luma | Both include Kling 3.0; Luma also lists Veo 3.1[5][6] |
| Short clips on a phone, no account | Cast | First 5-second video free with no sign-up; characters from text |
Free and cheap options
- Dreamina: free daily credits, with Seedance 2.5 and 2.0 among its models[7]; its guide gives an August 2026 baseline of 120 daily credits[11]. Basic is USD 15.00 a month for 1,575 credits[12].
- Kling: a free tier for eligible users; free exports generally carry a watermark[3].
- Google Flow: 50 credits a day per its credits page[13], though another help page lists a paid Google AI plan as required[14].
- Runway: 125 one-time credits; free-plan videos are watermarked[5][15].
- Pika: a free plan with no watermark but no included credits; Starter is $10 a month for 900 credits[16].
For our own videos we use Seedance through Atlas Cloud. On 2026-10-16 its price endpoint quoted our account $0.29 for 5 seconds of Seedance 2.0 Fast at 720p, below Atlas's public list price, so that is one account's quote rather than a guaranteed rate.
Which keep characters consistent
Sora's API allowed only non-human reusable characters and rejected input images with human faces[8]. The alternatives are more flexible but have their own rules. Seedance 2.5 takes up to 30 images in one pass[9], but BytePlus does not accept directly uploaded references that contain real human faces; it offers reuse of your own earlier outputs, preset digital characters, or verified authorisation instead[17]. Kling's Omni Reference takes multiple views of a character, up to 15 assets[3], and Veo 3.1 takes up to three reference images[18].
Whichever model you pick, consistency comes mostly from method: one master image, the first frame painted from it, and the character's look restated in every prompt. Our character consistency guide shows what worked across dozens of clips.
Which work on a phone
We did not test mobile apps for the tools above, so we will not claim which have good ones. Cast is built for phones: it runs in any phone browser, including the in-app browsers of social apps, and the first clip needs no account. It covers only short vertical character clips of 5, 10 and 15 seconds, not the general footage Sora made.
Where Cast fits
- Short vertical character clips on a phone, with no account for the first video.
- Recurring original characters described in one sentence.
- Dialogue rendered with the picture from one line of text.
Where it does not:
- Long takes over 15 seconds.
- Videos of real people, or an avatar of yourself.
- API access for an app you are building.
People also ask
- Is there an official Sora replacement from OpenAI?
- No. Its model page says there is no one-to-one replacement API for the Sora 2 models[1].
- Which Sora alternative is free?
- Dreamina and Kling both offer free credits[7][3], and Runway gives 125 one-time credits[5]. All three watermark free output or reserve watermark removal for paid plans[12][3][15].
