What is the best AI video generator in 2026?
There is no single best one; it depends on the job. As of 2026-10-18, Google's Veo 3.1 reaches 4K and has the cheapest Lite tier, while Kling 4.0 and Seedance 2.5 make the longest single clips (30 seconds) with the most reference inputs for keeping a character consistent[1][7][8]. For no-code use on a phone, apps that host these models, such as Dreamina or the Gemini app, are the easiest start[12][5].
How we judged them
Benchmarks of "realism" go stale in weeks and mostly reflect cherry-picked clips, so we compare what the providers themselves publish and what changes your result in practice:
- Length: the longest clip one generation makes, and whether it can be extended.
- Resolution: the maximum output size.
- Character control: how many reference images, clips or keyframes you can give it. This decides whether a face stays the same across shots.
- Native audio: whether dialogue and sound come out of the same render.
- Price: the lowest listed price per second at 720p.
- Access: free tier, and whether you can use it without code.
Our own hands-on experience is with Seedance, which we render every day; for the others we rely on their documentation, cited.

Sora is not in the table: OpenAI shut down the Sora 2 models and Videos API on 2026-09-24, with no one-to-one replacement API[20]. Midjourney also makes video, but only from a starting image, at 480p or 720p, up to 21 seconds with extensions[21]; see best image-to-video AI.
Best for each job
- Characters that stay the same across shots: Seedance 2.5 or Kling 4.0, which accept by far the most references: up to 30 images on Seedance 2.5[8] and 15 combined assets on Kling 4.0[7]. In our renders, starting each clip from a picture of the character mattered more than anything else; see best AI video generator for consistent characters.
- Highest resolution: Veo 3.1 or Veo 3.1 Fast, which output 4K[1]. Seedance 2.0 also offers 4K on BytePlus, but its Fast and Mini versions stop at 720p[9].
- Longest single take: Seedance 2.5 and Kling 4.0, both 30 seconds[8][7]. For anything longer, chain clips; see how to make AI videos longer.
- Native dialogue and sound: Veo 3.1, Kling 4.0 and Seedance all generate audio in the same render[3][7][8]. Seedance 2.5 also accepts an audio-only reference, which 2.0 does not[8].
- Cheapest: Veo 3.1 Lite at $0.05 a second[2] if you can call an API; otherwise a low-tier plan on Luma or a free daily allowance. Full numbers: AI video cost per second.
- Many models, one bill: Runway and Luma host third-party models alongside their own, including Kling 3.0 and Seedance 2.5 on Runway[18] and Veo 3.1, Kling 3.0, Seedance and MiniMax H3 on Luma[14].
Easiest on a phone
If you do not want an API key, use an app that wraps a model. Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month and includes video generation in the Gemini app[5]. Dreamina offers Seedance 2.5, 2.0 and 2.0 Mini with free daily credits in a browser[12], and CapCut has added Seedance 2.0 for its users, starting with paid plans[13]. Mind the house rules: Google's AI plans require users to be 18 or older in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK[6], and CapCut puts visible watermarks on Seedance output[13].
For short vertical clips of a recurring character, a single-purpose app is quicker than any of these. That is the gap Cast fills; it is narrower than the general tools above, and the trade-offs are listed below.
Verdict
Pick Veo 3.1 if you want the highest resolution or the cheapest API tier and can live with 8-second clips[1]. Pick Kling 4.0 if you want 30-second clips with keyframe control and multilingual dialogue[7]. Pick Seedance 2.5 if you need the most references to hold several characters steady, and Seedance 2.0 Fast to draft cheaply at 720p[8][10]. Pick a hosting app such as Runway, Luma or Dreamina if you want to switch between models without code. Whatever you choose, the prompt matters as much as the model; our AI video prompt guide covers the structure that works.
Where Cast fits
- Short vertical videos of a recurring character from one line, made on a phone: Cast renders on Seedance 2.0 Fast (720p) and, on Premium, Seedance 2.5 (1080p).
- Trying without an account, including inside TikTok's or Instagram's in-app browser: your first video, five seconds long, is free.
- Not writing prompts: an LLM expands your one line, plus an optional style, camera and vibe, into a full Seedance prompt.
Where it does not:
- Horizontal, 4K or clips longer than 15 seconds: use Veo 3.1, Kling 4.0 or Seedance 2.5 directly[1][7][8].
- Animating your own photo or drawing: Cast characters are drawn from a text description.
- Long films or series: Katechon Arc (https://arc.katechon.technology/) handles multi-episode dramas.
- Editing your own footage or lip-sync to your own audio.
