Why did Seedance block my video?

Most likely its copyright filter flagged the finished video, usually because a face resembled a famous actor or the scene showed a recognisable franchise character, prop or name. Real human faces in uploaded references are also refused up front on the official API[1]; the fix is to redesign the face or remove the franchise element, not to reword the same prompt.

What the copyright error means

In our renders, Seedance's check ran on the output, after the whole render. On the provider we use, a blocked render comes back with the message "The generated video may be related to copyright restrictions" (error code 1012004). It does not say what triggered it. In our experience the filter is about resemblance in the picture and words in the dialogue, not about your prompt's intent: rewriting a blocked shot without changing what it shows did nothing for us.

There is a second, earlier check. BytePlus, ByteDance's API, does not accept directly uploaded reference images or videos containing real human faces[1]. ByteDance Seed says using real portraits as subject references requires identity verification or prior legal authorization[2], and CapCut restricted real-face inputs during its Seedance rollout and uses technology to block unauthorized generation of intellectual property[3].

The triggers we hit, and what fixed them

TriggerWhat happenedFix that worked
A face that looks like a famous actorOf 41 failed shots in one series, 36 belonged to one character whose design read as a well-known film star; his shots failed 4 times out of 4.Redesign the face: different hair, glasses, a moustache instead of a beard. Every shot then passed.
A famous fictional character described in textDescribing one by his signature hair and glasses got 5 of 6 renders blocked.Removing the glasses passed, but he no longer read as the same person. Design an original character.
Franchise propsAn iconic patched brown pointed hat on a girl in robes was blocked.A black velvet hat with a silver buckle passed.
Franchise names in dialogueReal franchise names spoken by a character were blocked.Generic words passed, for example "the lions" and "the snakes".
Crests and logosA precaution rather than a logged block: uniforms and kits invite badges the model may copy.Keep "no logos, crests or numbers" in the avoid list.

One lesson cost us a lot of re-rendering: when a recurring character's face had to be redesigned, every earlier video with him had to be re-rendered to stay consistent. Design original faces from the start, and avoid prompting "famous actor" archetypes.

Am I charged for a blocked render?

On the official API, no: BytePlus charges only for successfully generated videos, and failures such as content-moderation blocks are free[4]. The billing docs of the reseller we use said the same when we read them, but a blocked render still costs you the wait for the full render. Apps that sell credits set their own refund rules; check them.

Is Seedance censored?

It has rules, and it enforces them on the output. Besides the copyright and real-face checks above, we could not find an official ByteDance or BytePlus page that lists exactly which copyrighted characters are blocked, so the table above is our experience, not a published policy. Image models used to make opening frames can be stricter still: on Midjourney a prompt with an exact teenage age was blocked where "a woman in her twenties" passed. People also ask

Why are lookalike faces blocked?
Our working explanation is that the filter judges what the finished video looks like, so an invented face that reads as a famous actor is treated like that actor. Redesigning the face is the fix that worked.
Will rewording the prompt get past the block?
Not in our experience. Rewriting the shot without changing the face or the prop that triggered it failed every time; changing what is on screen fixed it.
Can I use a photo of a real person in Seedance?
Not directly on the official API. BytePlus only allows real faces after verification and authorization by that person, or faces from your own earlier outputs within 30 days[1].
Does Seedance block fan art of famous characters?
CapCut says it blocks unauthorized generation of intellectual property[3], and in our tests recognisable franchise characters and props were blocked. Original characters inspired by a genre passed.
