How do I label a video as AI-generated on TikTok?

Turn on the "AI-generated content" setting on the posting screen before you publish; TikTok then shows "creator labeled as AI-generated" on the video[1]. The label is required for AI content that looks realistic and encouraged for everything else made or heavily edited with AI[1].

When the label is required

TikTok splits AI content into two groups. Anything with realistic images, audio or video must be labelled[1]. TikTok encourages labels on content that is completely generated or significantly edited by AI, and counts making someone do or say something they did not, or making them unrecognisable with a face swap, as significant editing[1]. Its definition of AI-generated content includes stylised output such as paintings, cartoons and anime, not only photoreal people[1].

What TikTok's AI-content rules ask for, by type of video
Your videoLabelSource
A photoreal AI person talking to camera, a realistic AI scene, a cloned voiceRequired[1] [2]
A fully AI-generated anime or cartoon characterEncouraged[1]
Real footage you trimmed, colour-graded or captionedNot AI content; do not label it[1]
A video made with TikTok's AI effects, or a file carrying C2PA Content Credentials[1]TikTok may apply it automatically[1]

TikTok's Community Guidelines, in the version effective September 24, 2026, say unlabelled realistic AI content may be removed, restricted, or labelled by TikTok itself[2]. The reverse also counts: putting the AI label on unaltered footage is a Terms of Service violation that can get the post removed[1].

How to add the label

  1. Upload or record your video as usual and go to the screen where you write the caption.
  2. Before posting, switch on the "AI-generated content" setting[1]. We could not verify which menu holds it on every app version, so check the post settings on that screen.
  3. Post. The video shows "creator labeled as AI-generated" to viewers[1].
  4. For videos you may also post elsewhere, use each platform's own disclosure: YouTube has its own altered-or-synthetic-content setting, covered in Do I have to disclose AI-generated videos on YouTube?.

Checked 2026-10-18. We could not verify on TikTok's help page whether the setting can be switched on after a video is already posted, so set it before you publish.

The auto-label, and why you cannot remove it

TikTok may add an "AI-generated" label on its own when a video was made with TikTok's AI effects or the uploaded file carries C2PA Content Credentials, an industry metadata standard that records how a file was made[1]. Some tools write that metadata into their output: CapCut, for example, labels Seedance output with visible watermarks, C2PA Content Credentials and invisible watermarking[3]. An auto-applied label cannot be removed by the creator[1]. This page does not explain how to strip that metadata or dodge detection; doing so to hide realistic AI content is exactly what the rules above prohibit.

If you think a label was applied to real footage by mistake, do not re-upload it in a way that hides its origin. We could not verify an appeal route for auto-labels on TikTok's help page.

Does the label hurt reach?

We could not find a TikTok statement on whether the label itself changes distribution. What TikTok does say is that unlabelled realistic AI content may be restricted[2], and that unoriginal or reused material is not eligible for the For You feed[2]. YouTube states that disclosing AI content alone does not limit a video's audience[4]. The label is the cheaper risk.

People also ask

Do cartoon or anime AI videos need the TikTok label?
TikTok encourages it rather than requires it for non-realistic content, and its definition of AI-generated content explicitly includes cartoons and anime[1]. Labelling costs nothing.
Can I remove an AI-generated label on TikTok?
Not one that TikTok applied automatically: the help page says auto-applied labels cannot be removed by the creator[1]. A label you added yourself is your own setting, but removing it from realistic AI content breaks the labelling requirement.
What happens if I do not label realistic AI content?
TikTok's Community Guidelines say it may remove the video, restrict it, or label it itself[2].
Does labelling make an AI video of a real person allowed?
No. Even labelled, TikTok does not allow AI content showing anyone under 18, adult private figures without their permission, or public figures falsely endorsing something[1].
